Most of the labour and nearly all of the material on a project comes through subcontractors and suppliers. Their safety record, their treatment of workers and the quality of what they deliver become part of our building, whether or not we examined them first.
Standards that carry down

Verifying material
Checking that what arrives is what was specified. Substituted or under-specification material is a recurring risk in this market and is best caught at delivery.
Paying on time
Small subcontractors and suppliers carry the least financial slack. Late payment transfers our cash-flow problem onto them.
